OLDHOUSE ROASTS

I AM HIS.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

JOHN 10:27-28

GENESIS

CHAPTER 1 VERSE 3 ROAST | ESPRESSO

Organically sourced in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. With notes of Cherry, Toffee and a touch of Heaven this Espresso roast is where it all started. We call it our Genesis roast because everything we’ve done since started from this first recipe and Genesis means beginning.

Just like our coffee roasting story started here, the very first part of the story of humanity is found in the biblical book of Genesis. Theologians say that every doctrine in all of scripture can be found somewhere in Genesis in seed form. If you’ve never read the Bible, here is a great place to start.

Genesis 1:11- “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so”
Praise the Lord God, maker of coffee!

Gen 3:15- “and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

This was the very first promise of salvation that God gave to us after we fell, really it is the very first mention of the gospel in all of scripture. Jesus, the seed of the woman, has crushed the serpent’s head through dying on the cross. What an awesome savior!

Genesis 22:18- “and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed…”

This covenant promise God made with Abraham so many millennia ago would be ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jesus, the offspring of Abraham, is King of Kings and makes his offer of salvation to people from every nation, tongue and tribe. In him is blessing for any and all who put their trust in him.

MATTHEW

CHAPTER 5 VERSE 6 | LIGHT ROAST

Organically sourced in Chiapas, Mexico this Light roast carries a fresh citrus and floral note with a distinct crisp tartness. You can almost taste the sunshine!

The light roast is the most flavorful, and strongest. When we think of light, or strength for that matter, we think of Jesus. In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai after meeting with God and receiving God’s law, his face shone with a glorious but fading light (Exodus 34:30). The weakening of the light from his face was to show that while God’s law is good and needed it is unable to get us to God (2 Corinthians 3:7). Unlike that fading light of Moses’ face, the true light, Jesus Christ lasts forever. When you receive that Light, your life begins to reflect Him. At first it might just be a spark and sometimes it flickers but by His grace as we walk with Him through this life that light grows brighter and brighter, until the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18) when we are with Him in glory. Since Christ indwells His people, Jesus not only calls Himself the light of the world but he calls us the light of the world, now too (Matthew 5:14). And he tells us in the verse this roast is named after:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

RUTH

THE REDEMPTION ROAST | MEDIUM

Organically sourced in Ethiopia this velvety smooth medium roast with notes of cranberry and fresh plum is our most popular roast. We love it and think you will too.

Ruth, the Moabitess was an outsider, excluded from the people of God. The Lord chose to put this woman (among others) into His own genealogy in order to bring attention to the fact that God is doing a work in a people who are at their heart enemies of His. He loves them to death and turns his enemies into friends. He does this by His great redeeming blood.

Ruth’s Roast is our most popular roast, and we call it Redemption since that is humanities greatest need whether they know it or not.

We are by nature strangers, aliens, enemies, hostile to God. But the redemption price has been paid for people like us from every nation, tongue and tribe throughout the world. We have been bought back by God by the blood of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you’ve never read Ruth’s story you can find it in the Biblical book named for her. In Ruth 4:4-7 the kinsmen redeemer Boaz pays the redemption price for this widow when the one who should have done so could not. Boaz serves as a great picture of Christ Jesus, who for the love of His bride paid a great price that no mere human could ever pay for ourselves or for each other.

Colossians 1:13-14 mentions the great exchange that took place on the cross of calvary when it says that God “hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”

Hebrews 9:12 explains that Jesus death as our substitute has purchased for us life forever with him, “… by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

REVELATION

THE FAITHFUL JOURNEY | DARK

We often speak of the common grace associated with coffee like how on especially rough mornings good coffee seems to make life more manageable. We think this organically sourced Guatemalan dark roast is just such a coffee and are grateful to God for its notes of cocoa and pecans that bring a bit of sweetness even to the hard days.

We know the road that God has put us on is never easy. The journey is hard but the Lord of the journey is faithful. He has promised that the tumultuous seas of life will one day be as still as crystal. He has already won the victory and we know the end of the story. The last book of the bible, Revelation, is what this roast is named for. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

In Revelation 7:14 one of the elders explains to John the vision he saw of a multitude of people from every nation, tongue and tribe, clothed in white and singing with one voice praises to God and the Lamb on the throne. The elder said “These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

Later in Revelation John sees a vision of the enemies of God and how scary this world seems as darkeness seems at times to be getting thicker. But the messenger tells him and us in chapter 17 verse 14, “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” It is a simple matter of fact, the enemies of God will make war against the lamb but He will win the day because of who He is. The amazing thing about that to us is that those who are with Jesus are mentioned. You are either with Him or against Him. There is no neutral ground in this life. We are with Him, He is our only hope.

Because He is faithful, we can be faithful to what he has called us. We don’t have what it takes but He always does. All eyes on Jesus!

“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” -Revelation 23:17

ISAIAH

THE HUMBLE ROAST | DECAF

Organically sourced in Chihuahua, Mexico this decaffeinated medium-dark roast has a full-bodied flavor we describe as mellow graham cracker. We call it our humble roast because of that characteristic being so much a part of who Jesus is.

So many people are all hype, pomp and fluff. Jesus is of more worth than all creation but you never find him bragging or boasting. He came as a humble servant, to seek and save the lost, to give his life as a ransom for many. He left the glories of heaven to be born into poverty, to live and die for rebels and to be despised and rejected by his own people. This didn’t just happen, but he knew what he was getting into and He did it anyway.

Perhaps nowhere else in all of scripture is the lowliness of Jesus better seen than in the prophecy of Isaiah, written hundreds of years before Jesus’ incarnation. If you’ve never read chapter 53 of Isaiah it is a powerful description of our humble savior.

Isaiah 53:5-6 says of Jesus: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:5-11
